Can a foreign national drive in Italy with his foreign driving license?

A foreigner is permitted to drive in Italy provided he has an International driving license in his possession. He should have obtained the international driving license from a country which has bilateral agreement with the government of Italy.

He can drive in Italy with a copy of valid International driving license, translated into the Italian language, and authorized by the consulate or embassy of Italy located in the nation to which the foreigner belongs to.

Likewise the foreign national is entitled to drive in Italy with his International driving license only for a period of one year after he has acquired the status of Permanent Resident (PR).

International driving license conversion into Italy driving license.

You can convert your valid foreign driving license into Italy driving license one year after he has acquired the permanent Resident status. If his native country has entered into a bilateral agreement with Italy, then he can easily convert his foreign driving license into Italy driving license. In such case, he need not take up any driving test prior to the issue of his Italy driving license.

If the foreign national ash been caught after being one year as Permanent resident and if he his found to be still driving with his foreign license without converting it into Italy license, then a fine will be levied on him. It ranges from 155, 00 to 624, 00 Euros and it will also lead to the withdrawal his license.

Algeria, Argentina, Albania, Switzerland Tunisia, Uruguay, San Marino El Salvador, Croatia, Japan, The Philippines, Macedonia, Lebanon, Moldavia, Principality of Monaco Morocco, Czech Republic, Taiwan,. and Turkey.

However at any time the above mentioned country list may change. It is advisable that the applicant verify witht adjacent Provincial Office of Motor Vehicles.
