Workers

Foreign national who want to work in Japan should obtain a work visa from the Japanese consulate or embassy that is located outside the country of Japan, so that they can gain entry into Japan with a residence work permitting status.

More than a dozen residence status are available for Japan , each permitting the bearer to work in a particular area profession, for instance arts, research, journalism, engineering, entertainment, business management, education, international services, etc.

Suppose while you are in Japan and if you happen to switch over to new jobs, and suppose if your new job comes under a different professional category for instance from education to engineering, then you need to modify your residence status.

In order to get qualified for a working visa, you need to have a significant professional experience or a university degree. Likewise a majority of the various types of working visa requires a potential employer as your guarantor. Permission for residence is normally granted for a time period ranging form one to three year and can be extended.

Students

Foreign national who intend to study in Japan (other than short term courses at language schools) are required to obtain a student visa at the consulate or embassy of Japan ,which is situated outside Japan, so that it facilitates them to have entry into Japan and study there for studies on long term.

Depending upon the type of study, the residence status differs, for instance pre-college, cultural activities or college. The conditions required for a foreigner to get a student visa are, he should have obtain a sponsorship from the educational institution in Japan, in which is going to study, and also he should also have proof to show that he has adequate funds in his possession. The permission for residence is given in time period that ranges from 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and that can be extended.

Students are not permitted in any kind of salaried activities, unless they have the required permission from the immigration office or from the educational institution in which they study. Even if the student gets the required permission, they can only work for a certain fixed maximum hours for each week.
