Expatriates await favourable sponsorship and exit rules



DOHA: Expatriate communities here are eagerly waiting to see favourable changes in the sponsorship and exit permit rules, says a prominent Indian who represented the community at a labour rights conference here yesterday.

“This is particularly true of low-income workers. They are eager to see changes in the above rules,” said Karim Abdullah.

Abdullah said particularly worrying is the condition that if a worker leaves a company, even if the fault is the company’s, he can return to Qatar to take up a job only after two years.

“This is too long a period. This condition should be amended in a way that balances the right of both the worker and the employer.”

Abdullah, a former head of a community corpus of Indians, Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), told Al Sharq the two-year period of absence should at least be reduced.

Abdullah lauded the proposed wage protection system (WPS) whereby workers will be paid salaries through banking

channels and said that would guarantee that low-income workers are paid in time.

Nepali community representative, Mohamed Ramzan Ali Mian said the labour situation in Qatar was improving.

“We see labour inspectors visiting labour camps to ensure Qatari specifications are met.”

A representative of the Yemeni community told Al Sharq that since a lot of changes were taking place in Qatar on the social and economic fronts, changes should accordingly take place in the situation of foreign workers as well.

“Labour rights need to be protected in line with the changes taking place in the realm of economy and society,” said Abdul Haleem Al Sadi.

These expatriate community elders attended a labour rights conference which was held by Dar Al Sharq and opened by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, H E Dr Abdullah bin Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi.
