Bar panel stipulates dress code for Qatari, expatriate lawyers

DOHA: A committee on bar admissions at the Ministry of Justice has deiced that all lawyers in the county, whether locals or expatriates, will follow a uniform dress code.

Qatari lawyers while in court use black robe on their traditional attire. Some use transparent fabric while others use non-transparent ones.

The committee has, however, decided that no one will use transparent robes anymore. It is likely the panel may in the near future specify the type of fabric to be used for the robe.

Expatriate lawyers might, though, wear badges that will show the courts they are registered with — whether with the primary courts, the courts of appeal or the highest court.

The committee met yesterday chaired by Minister of Justice, H E Dr Hassan bin Lahdan Saqr Al Mohannadi. Qatari Lawyers’ Association is also represented on it.

Lawyer Yusuf Al Zaman said the panel was told that some non-Qatari lawyers were dressing like Qataris so it was decided to make the dress code uniform for both.

It couldn’t be, though, known if non-Qatari lawyers would be required to also use badges that would show they are expatriates.

Al Zaman told this newspaper that the panel also decided to prepare a database on Qatari law firms and their employees, including the lawyers working with them and their qualifications and experience and specializations.

The committee admitted many non-Qatari lawyers into the bar.

Al Zaman said for a non-Qatari to acquire a license to practice law in Qatar he must be registered as a lawyer for the appeal court in his home country and practiced the profession for at least 10 years.

Then, he must be employed with a Qatari law firm and must be under its sponsorship for at least three years.
