The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s biggest reef and it comprises of 2900 individual reefs and 900 islands. The ref stretches for over a distance of 2,600 kms an covers an area of 344,400 square kilometers approximately.

From the outer space the coral reef can viewed as the globe’s largest single structure composed of living organisms. In the year 1981, it was selected as a world heritage site. It is situated in the Coral Sea, just off the Queensland coast in north east Australia.

At the Great Barrier Reef, on can have a close meeting with the coral gardens. . Here one can find more than 400 types of coral sponges, dolphins, rays, and more than 1500 kind of tropical fish, 20 species of reptiles including the giant clams and sea turtles.
