17 factories closed down for flouting rules; owners interrogated

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently shuttered 17 factories for various violations in Riyadh. The factories include units to manufacture paint, plastics, sponges, garments and perfumes in Al-Shafa district in south Riyadh.
The ministry said it summoned those responsible for the violations, which were mostly related to manufacturing processes and the use of raw materials unfit for consumption, after closure of their units.
The ministry’s inspection teams observed that some of the units ignored hygienic and safety specifications, while others were poor in organization and arrangement of the factories, in addition to employing a number of illegal laborers.
The inspection teams visited more than 50 manufacturing units in the neighborhood to ensure that they were following all regulations laid down by the ministry.
The violations were referred to the committee for industrial violations, which specializes in monitoring, investigating and deciding on cases of irregularities in industrial projects. The committee also issues verdicts against the violators after investigations.
In a statement issued on the launch of the working committee, the ministry announced verdicts against 22 factories that violated industrial regulations in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Alkhobar, Abha and Khamis Mushayt, for violations which included failure to fulfill the standards fixed by the Saudi Standards and Specification Organization, and violation of anti-commercial fraud laws and imitation of famous well-known brands.
The ministry also called on members of the public to call 1900 with any complaints about factory violations.
