A 21 year university student, who was believed to be brain dead, wake up from his coma, prior to his organ donation. Sam Schmid, a student at the University of Arizona; got hurt critically in a Tucson car accident that occurred last October.

Sam met with fatal injuries, and the local hospital found it difficult to treat. He was then shifted by flight to Phoenix’s Barrow Neurological Institute, located at the Joseph's Medical Center.

Sensing a possible lethal brain aneurysm, the surgeons conducted a surgery on Sam Schmid. But the doctor’s treatment turned in vain, as Sam did not show any responsive signals. The physicians finally decided to take him off from the life support. They spoke to Sam’s parents on donating his organs.

But a few hours before, when the physician were thinking of taking Sam from the life support, he suddenly started to respond, by unexpectedly lifting up his two fingers in control. The student is now walking with the help of a walker and even though his speech is somewhat slow, it is gradually showing signs of improvement.

Considering the seriousness of his injury, Sam’s recovery is remarkable, as cited by his physician. However it will take some more time for Sam Schmid to fully regain his speech, memory, and balance capabilities.
