Seven to die in Pakistan for lynching brothers

Islamabad, Sep 21 (IANS) Seven people were sentenced to death and nine policemen were jailed by a court for the lynching of two brothers near Sialkot in Pakistan's Punjab province, a media report said.


An anti-terrorism court Tuesday convicted 22 people, including nine policemen, for the the lynching of the two brothers, Hafiz Muneeb and Hafiz Mughees.

The brothers were lynched by a mob Aug 15 last year in Buttar village in the presence of police.

Dawn reported that the court sentenced seven of the convicts to death, gave life term to six others and jailed nine policemen for three years.

The court acquitted five co-accused.

Police had initially registered a case in which the two brothers were accused of murder and robbery. A second FIR was registered after a video of the lynching was aired on TV channels.

The family of the brothers said they were satisfied with the verdict.
