British police release CCTV footage of rioters

London, Aug 11 (IANS) Video footage of rioters who looted shops and establishments in Birmingham and Liverpool has been released by police.

A gallery of suspects has been posted on the web by West Midlands police who have urged anyone who recognises the rioters to call the authorities or email them, the Daily Mail reported.

West Midlands police has arrested 330 people since Monday, including a 14-year-old girl who was taken to a police station by her uncle who suspected her of possessing stolen clothing.

Magistrates have been hearing cases throughout the night till 6 a.m. from defendants charged in the riots. The cases were of burglary, arson, theft and violent disorder.

"We will not tolerate violent behaviour in the West Midlands and will arrest anyone who commit acts of violence or criminality... offenders can expect to be put before the courts and will face the full force of the law," West Midlands Police Chief Constable Chris Sims was quoted as saying.

Police chiefs said Wednesday night passed off peacefully in Birmingham, with major roads into the city being closed from 9 p.m. as a precaution.

Merseyside police also released CCTV footage, and asked public to email names of anyone they recognise.

Assistant Chief Constable Andy Ward said: "The public have an important part to play and I would urge everyone to look at the images in the media and tell us who these offenders are and where we can find them so they can be brought to justice."
