39 held in Pakistan for serving food in Ramzan

Islamabad, Aug 7 (IANS) At least 39 people running restaurants and roadside eateries in Pakistan's Faisalabad city were arrested for serving food during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan, a media report said.

The 39 people arrested in raids from various parts of the city were sent to jail for 72 hours under the Ehtiram-e-Ramzan Ordinance, The News reported Sunday.

The ordinance, promulgated during the reign of Gen. Zia ul-Haq, prohibits eating, drinking or smoking in public places or serving food during the daylong fast, supposed to be kept by all able-bodied Muslims during the month.
