First exclusive women's whisky club to host whisky appreciation session
NEW DELHI: Whisky connoisseur and lifestyle consultant Sandeep Arora is busy preparing for a whisky appreciation session he will conduct at The Spirit of Nero - the first exclusive women's whisky club in India - in Delhi's Le Meridien hotel later this week.

At least 60 women, including corporate honchos, entrepreneurs, artists and diplomats, are expected to attend the late evening event that will discuss the correct style of nosing the drink, choice of pre-dinner and post-dinner whiskies, and glassware options among others.

"Women are emerging as excellent aficionados of whisky, which was earlier solely considered a male territory," says Arora. "Even in my general appreciation sessions, at least 40% of the gathering now comprises women who know their whiskies really well," he adds.

Young urban women are the new toast of several spirits makers and bar owners, who are creating exclusive clubs and organising cocktail workshops, appreciation sessions and by-invitation events to win over the ladies.

Cocktail Parties

Companies such as Diageo and The Edrington Group are looking at ways to attract this growing club of professional and socialite women in the 25-35 age bracket, who are welltravelled, have disposable income and, let's say, call their shots. Ladies nights have become a common custom in bars and restaurants in metros and large cities.

Premium women's-only liquor clubs and exclusive appreciation and mentorship sessions with women in top corporate roles too have become popular as companies in the business try to convert women into consumers and even brand ambassadors. Priyanka, a 26-year-old banker, recently ditched the boys to have a fun bachelorette party with five friends at her apartment in Bandra. What made this special was liquor maker Remy Cointreau sent across a top mixologist in Mumbai to teach the young women mix their own cocktails.

Six cocktail shakers - all pretty pink in colour - were delivered at Priyanka's apartment the previous evening. The young women were taught how to mix first a Cointreaupolitan - a combination of Cointreau, cranberry juice and lemon juice - and then many more cocktails. Cointreau is a triple sec liqueur (a strong, sweet and colourless orange-flavoured liqueur) brand and a new entrant in India.

Reaching out to women is the central theme for its promo in the country. "We have decided to reach out to a segment of women who are charismatic, confident and stylish through our campaign 'Be Cointreauversial'," says Risabh Suresh, Remy Cointreau's marketing manager for the Indian subcontinent. Special cocktail classes for women are a big hit in restaurants as well.

Kylin Premier-The Teppanyaki Grill, a fine dining restaurant in South Delhi, becomes a packed house every Thursday evening when it holds the 'Goddess Nights'. That's when more than 50 young women-some regulars and some first-timers- come here to learn the art of mixing a cocktail. "We pick a new cocktail every week and educate them on the various nuances of making a good one.

From high-end ones such as bellini and kir royale to sangria and many flavours of margaritas, we've done many already," says Saurabh Khanijo, CEO of the restaurant.

NOT DABBLERS

Companies say these urban woman guzzlers are evolved and not amateurs. Diageo, the world's largest spirits maker with brands such as Johnnie Walker scotch whisky and Smirnoff vodka, says urban women in India show a great deal of sophistication in the choice of liquor.
