THREE Bahrainis are accused of using mobile phone SIM cards belonging to Asian labourers to detonate bombs.

Two of the defendants are in custody and they appeared in the High Criminal Court yesterday to plead not guilty to rioting, causing an explosion and using SIM cards to detonate bombs.

A mob of masked men blocked a highway in Sehla with tyres and debris on May 5 last year to lure in police.

As officers moved in a homemade explosive device was remotely detonated, leaving two officers with minor injures.

One of the defendants described to prosecutors how he purchased SIM cards from another man for BD100.

'I was told by a friend to get SIM cards for him,' the 22-year-old said in his statement to prosecutors.

'I asked another friend to provide me with 30 SIM cards that he obtained using identification cards belonging to Asian men.

'He agreed and gave me 30 SIM cards for BD70.

'He then left them at a cold store in Budaiya where I picked them up.'

He said he did the same two weeks later after he was asked for additional SIM cards.

'Two weeks later I bought 15 SIM cards for BD35,' he said.

The trial was adjourned until May 25 to arrest the defendant still at large.
