Motorists to face Dh200 fine, confiscation of vehicle for 'poor tyres'
Motorists to face Dh200 fine and confiscation of vehicle for 7 days if tyres are in poor condition. Abu Dhabi — Following an increasing number of accidents caused by tyres bursting due to heat during this time of the year, the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate has intensified its campaign on main highways checking vehicles for worn-out tyres. Last Saturday, a fatal accident caused by a worn-out tyre caused a pilgrimage bus returning from Saudi Arabia to turn-over near Abu Al Abbyadh, killing three people and injuring 56 passengers. According to the directorate, the campaign is focused on Al Ain and Al Gharbia (Western Region) highways, where most accidents are reported. “The awareness campaign aims at educating motorists on the need to check their vehicles’ tyres regularly and change them if used for extended periods of time, particularly when on the road for long drives during summer, causing them to burst due to high temperatures,†said Major Salah Abdullah Al Hemairi, Chief of the Al Ain Traffic Section He also warned motorists against using substandard, faulty or worn-out tyres to avoid being fined. “The campaigns is carried out by the section to stop motorists from driving their vehicles with old and worn-out tyres for their safety. Al Hemairi added that the efforts and intensive monitoring of the various roads in Al Ain have resulted in the confiscation of approximately 5,176 vehicles with worn-out tyres during the first quarter of this year. “Motorists found to be driving vehicles with tyres in poor condition are punishable by a fine of Dh200 and their vehicles were confiscated for seven days,†he continued. He also emphasised that the outreach programmes will continue in order to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of using top quality and reliable tyres. The programmes include outreach campaigns carried out by the Education Patrols of the Traffic Department, to promote awareness among motorists, as well as inspection visits to tyre dealers and shops, and distribution of awareness brochures to guide and educate them. Major Al Hemairi also advised drivers to follow correct instructions to ensure the safety of their vehicles’ tyres by checking their safety lifetime, their temperature tolerance, and the appropriate cargo-load of vehicles.
